For as long as she can remember, Soma has been searching for her parents. A lead takes her to an island in the North Sea, but no sooner has she arrived than a series of eerie phenomena begins to unfold. While conducting her own investigation, Soma receives a crucial tip from a young police officer named Till—but an encounter with the mysterious Amke ends in a deeply unsettling warning. A strange, uncanny glow draws Soma out onto the mudflats, where she comes across a man who, by all rights, should not exist. Meanwhile, Ben Sandmann—a local politician and owner of the island's campsite—is fighting to save his marriage to his wife, Kathrin, whom his own actions had driven into the arms of another man. And Soma's best friends, Paula and Flynt—who accompanied her to the island—begin to wonder whether this is truly just a holiday trip after all.
A man emerges from the mudflats who looks exactly like campsite operator Ben Sandmann—and he has one goal: to take Sandmann's place. Soma is rescued from the sea, returning with a story that no one believes. Following a second, shocking encounter with old Amke, she finds herself in the crosshairs of the police. Meanwhile, the mysterious stranger delves into the life of Ben Sandmann, eventually coming face-to-face with him. Paula and Flynt want to help Soma, but they view her quest to uncover her origins as a dangerous obsession—one that has already plunged her into existential crises. A young police officer, Till, also attempts to support Soma, much to the displeasure of his superior, Ahrens, who has set his sights on Soma due to her prior criminal record. When Soma finally returns to the site of her vision, the signs grow increasingly clear: something is approaching the island—and it is now beyond anyone's power to stop it.
Another "dark" figure appears on the island. She sets her sights on Wiebke's son, Milo, who soon vanishes without a trace. Soma attempts to expose Ben Sandmann as an impostor—a "double"—and uncovers a local island legend. Suddenly, many things begin to make unsettling sense. While Till investigates the case of the missing boy, the "dark" Wiebke embraces her role as a mother with obsessive devotion. Paula and Flynt grow deeply concerned about Soma; she seems to be increasingly reverting to the state she was in during past crises. An open conflict erupts when her friends cast doubt on her theories. As Wiebke works desperately with the police to find her son, Till discovers clues that could support Soma's suspicions. Meanwhile, Ben Sandmann does everything in his power to protect his identity, all while pursuing a new objective: he wants to become mayor.
Till finds himself caught in the crossfire. The more questions Soma raises, the less clear it becomes whether he is seeking the truth—or trying to shield himself from it. While searching for evidence, Soma stumbles upon a place that Ben Sandmann is desperate to keep secret; his worst suspicions are confirmed. Meanwhile, the somber Wiebke is building a new life with her son, Milo—until his stepfather, Jan, appears—a man she does not recognize. After a falling-out with Soma, Paula and Flynt attempt to leave the island, only to encounter a sinister doppelgänger and find themselves in mortal danger. At the same time, Ben Sandmann's behavior grows increasingly aggressive—toward his wife, Kathrin; his son, Noah; and anyone else who gets too close to him. Yet, just as Soma believes he is finally on the verge of exposing him, Ben receives some unexpected help.
Following her arrest and subsequent escape from the island guard, Police Chief Ahrens launches a manhunt for Soma. She receives help from a mysterious lighthouse keeper, who reveals a truth that changes everything. With every lie, the distrust of Ben Sandmann's wife, Kathrin, continues to grow. Meanwhile, Jan picks up the trail of the sinister Wiebke—placing not only himself in grave danger. As Soma frantically searches for answers while on the run, Till joins her side, making himself a target as well. After a harrowing encounter with one of the "dark ones," it becomes clear to Paula and Flynt just how right Soma was in her suspicions. Reunited, the friends work together to find an explanation for these eerie doppelgängers. But the closer they get to the truth, the more evident it becomes: the events on the island are inextricably linked to Soma herself.
Soma finally finds out where she comes from. But before she can find answers, she must face her most dangerous opponents. Till evaluates surveillance videos and makes a fatal discovery. Kathrin asks questions that Ben can't answer. Wiebke's son Milo is faced with an impossible decision. And Soma realizes: she is not just part of the story - but its key. Ben Sandmann is on the verge of the greatest success of his life. The mayoral election is within reach. But as he becomes more and more powerful publicly, his private life falls apart. When Kathrin finally realizes that Ben is no longer the man she married, she makes a momentous decision. Wiebke and Jan are desperately trying to get their little son Milo back and restore their family. But the gloomy Wiebke refuses to give up the life she dreamed of. While Paula and Flynt and Soma decipher the secret of the Dark Ones, they team up.
