The Americas with Simon Reeve — Season 1

The expedition begins at the northernmost point in Alaska, journeying south through Canada to the border with the US. In Denali National Park, he witnesses first hand the impact of climate change on a glacier. He also hunts caribou with native Americans, hears from both sides of the conflict over a controversial oil drilling plan, and discovers Vancouver's opioid addiction crisis.

Simon follows the magnificent Rocky Mountains south through the USA, from the endless prairies of Montana to the huge prison complex that dominates Cañon City, Colorado. On the way, he encounters Mormon missionaries, North American bison and the policeman of a tiny town getting rich from legal cannabis. It's a world where America's deep divisions - between the country, the cities and between different ethnic groups - are laid bare.

Simon travels the length of California, scaling one of the tallest trees on the planet and meeting the Hotshot fire crews battling blazes that are ravaging a state with a changing climate and a chronic shortage of water. Not far from the celebrity-spotting tours of Beverley Hills, Simon meets the street doctors who provide help among the shocking poverty of Los Angeles' Skid Row. Deep in the southern desert, he enters the Mad Max world of Americans who have dropped out of the rat race entirely and now live in the wild squat called Slab City.

Simon Reeve travels through Texas and Mexico. In Texas, Simon joins the US Border Patrol, who pick up migrants who have illegally crossed the Rio Grande river in search of a new life.

Simon travels across Central America, from the Caribbean to the Pacific. Along the way, he goes diving on a coral reef on the coast of Belize, and witnesses a gun battle between park rangers and intruders in Chiquibul National Park. He also discovers how climate change has left Guatemala devastated by famine and drought, reports on measures to curb gang violence in El Salvador, and learns how Costa Rica aims to become the world's first carbon neutral country by 2021.
