1890 is an original Slovak historic crime drama series, inspired by real events of the remote region Gemer at the turn of the century. Set in the aristocratic mansion of Betler, the story follows an ingenious if arrogant detective who arrives from Budapest invited to investigate a gruesome murder. Confronted by superstition and incompetence, he learns to accept the ways of his new surrounding that regards modernisation as a threat, yet offers more than meets the eye.
