Todd Brotzman gets swept up in a whirlwind of intrigue when a millionaire is murdered in the hotel penthouse where Todd works. The police suspect Todd was involved, and holistic detective Dirk Gently believes that Todd is his new assistant.
When Dirk steals his lottery ticket, Todd reluctantly continues helping him. The clues mount up, and a dog named Rapunzel may be the break that the unlikely partners are looking for to crack the case... as soon as they figure out what the case is.

Meanwhile, Dirk and Todd go for a treasure hunt to find Patrick Spring's machine, and Zimmerfield and Estevez discover interference with their investigation into Lydia's disappearance.

Dirk and Todd travel one week into the past, and Todd learns why Dirk knows so much about the case. Meanwhile, Zachariah becomes Edgar becomes Patrick and ends up killing himself with a weaponized soul.
