After his daughter is murdered in an apparent ritual sacrifice, Harvard astrophysicist Dr. Richard Massey travels to Chile to find the killer. There he meets Sister Josepha Montafiore, a devout nun who recruits Massey to investigate signs that point to the imminent end of the world as foretold in the New Testament's Book of Revelations. Meanwhile, Satanist Isaiah Haden has answered the Devil's call to make certain the Armies of Darkness will triumph in the apocalyptic battle to come. Together, the scientist and the nun race against the clock in hopes of averting Armageddon and proving that mankind is the master of its own fate.

Apocalypse now? In Part 1 of this six-part theological thriller, signs that "the end of days" is at hand begin to appear, including a shadow of a crucifix on a Mexican mountain; an infant who (miraculously, it seems) survives a shipwreck; and strange utterances in Latin from a brain-dead girl. They attract religious scholar Sister Josepha and reluctant astrophysicist Richard Massey, who is licking his wounds: His daughter was murdered by Satanists.

Biblical prophecies about "the end of days" are playing out, she says. But, she adds: "I believe the Bible left a `blank,' to be filled in by man." He signs on and they head to the Greek island Patmos, in search of a "miracle baby" who was the only survivor of a shipwreck.
