When analysis of a small piece of cedar wood from a dig indicates that it is 2,000 years old and originates from the Holy Land, Dr Gillian Magwilde and her team race to uncover the truth. While Magwilde surveys the site, however, a religious extremist acquires the land and declares it Holy Ground. Believing Britain is at war for its Christian soul, the fanatical Christian reawakens a force of violent modern-day crusaders.

When an Iraqi archaeologist from Gillian's past enlists the team's help, they discover a sacred tablet predicting the future of Iraq, as well as an opportunistic war-zone looter and a dodgy antiquities dealer whose lives are in danger.

A British First World War tank containing the burnt remains of six bodies is uncovered in France. Evidence of a war crime soon emerges and Gillian inadvertently ignites an international feud with French and German archaeologists. But when violent events occur at the dig site, it becomes clear someone is trying to cover up the truth.
